Election '06
Final polling, full swing GOTV efforts, last minute literature drops, and the last of the media ads are here, signaling one to go. This certainly has been an extraordinary campaign year which has seen:
- An initial groundswell support for Tester by moderate R's, although that has pulled back slightly
- Absolutely no support for Lindeen other than the D base
- Taxes are still the core issue in Montana
- the two most popular Montana Governors in the Senate ad wars
- The most effective advertising for Burns coming from his opponent in the primary
- The republican legislative committee remained cohesive, on message, and actually worked for the slate of their candidates, rather than strictly individual races.
- The fizzle of the initiative fight as unethical behavior is rightfully punished
Additionally, Montana has not seen the extent of the GOTV effort from both parties as it has this cycle. Traditionally, the democrats had an advantage in this area, but the GOP has learned well. This years GOP effort is good and bad for the Democrats
- Will close the gap, but not overcome Tester's lead and win on election day
- Will provide for R votes at the local level, including the Legislature. Don't be surprised if the republicans take control of both the Senate & House, but definitely the House.
What is left? Differences will need to be set aside as key issues are addressed, particularly in the Legislature. Gametime.
