Eisler: Solutions
Earlier, MOTTO posted Barry Eisler's discussion piece The Roots of Arab Muslim Sickness. The third & final installment, Solutions, was posted on September 11th. In a nutshell, Eisler suggests:
- Lessen dependence on oil
- Get out of Iraq
- A variety of foreign policy approaches
Eisler calls Iraq "the greatest foreign policy mistake in US history", followed by
How do we get out of Iraq? First, we have to change our rhetoric. The story we need to tell the world -- and ourselves -- is that "we already won the war; the rest is up to Iraqis. If they prefer civil war to unity and prosperity, we can't help them. If by their actions they indicate that they prefer a breakup of the country, we won't stand in their way. Our task was to topple Hussein and verify no WMD; that mission has been accomplished."
Like parts 1 & 2, Eisler presents a well written and non-partisan discussion piece. While some of the conclusions that are ultimately made may be considered political (oil, mistake in Iraq, etc) the piece is certainly not. The reader must place the conclusion in context with the series & events, not the rhetoric of our political parties.
Eisler ends the discussion with the following (now go read it)
Islamofascism can't win this struggle. Only we can lose it.
